Review by Mark Balcar

Amulet is a captivating album by Sainkho Ned Rothenberg that showcases her unique vocal style and experimental approach to music. The album features a blend of traditional Tuvan throat singing and contemporary jazz elements, creating an otherworldly sound that is both haunting and beautiful.

The opening track, "Kyzyl Koshin," sets the tone for the album with its hypnotic rhythms and ethereal vocals. Sainkho's voice is both powerful and delicate, as she effortlessly moves between different vocal techniques and styles.

Throughout the album, Sainkho is accompanied by a talented group of musicians, including Ned Rothenberg on saxophone and clarinet, and Tuvan musicians Albert Kuvezin and Radik Tyulyush on various instruments. Together, they create a rich and diverse sound that is both experimental and accessible.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Spectral," which features Sainkho's vocals layered over a pulsing electronic beat. The result is a mesmerizing and hypnotic track that showcases Sainkho's versatility as a musician and performer.
