Review by Panos Paganis

The Rumproller is a classic jazz album by Lee Morgan, released in 1965. With a mix of hard bop and soul jazz, the album showcases Morgan's virtuosic trumpet playing, as well as his talents as a composer and bandleader. The title track, "The Rumproller," is a groovy tune with a catchy melody and a funky rhythm section. Other highlights include "Desert Moonlight," a dreamy ballad, and "Eclipso," a hard-hitting blues number. The album also features a stellar lineup of musicians, including Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Ronnie Mathews on piano, Victor Sproles on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The Rumproller is a must-have for fans of classic jazz and a testament to Lee Morgan's enduring legacy as one of the greatest trumpet players of all time.

A somewhat unsuccesful attempt at catching lightning in a bottle twice, Morgan tries to replicate the success of his earlier "The Sidewinder" by following essentially the same formula on the title track, but with diminished results. It's still a good set of pop-oriented Hard Bop that occasionally gets more complex on tracks like the sultry "Desert Moonlight", while both Morgan's and Joe Henderson's solos cetainly shine on the Coltrane-esque Wayne Shorter composition "Edda", and the closer "Venus di Mildrew" swings nicely, but overall it just quite doesn't live up to its predecessor's greatness, and definitely seems like a step backward for the trumpeter after having released more adventurous material like "Search for the New Land" in the interim. It's certainly not a bad album, by any means, but it's probably not an essential choice for anyone but die-hard Morgan fans.
