Bill Frisell - Have A Little Faith

Review by cheris21 Beagle-line

The album Have A Little Faith by Bill Frisell is a testament to the musician's versatility and creativity. Featuring a mix of original compositions and covers of classic tunes, the album showcases Frisell's unique approach to jazz and Americana music.

The opening track, "The Open Prairie," sets the tone for the album with its haunting melody and sparse instrumentation. From there, Frisell takes the listener on a journey through a variety of musical styles, from the bluesy "Rag" to the upbeat "Little Jenny Dow."

One of the standout tracks on the album is Frisell's cover of "Shenandoah," which features his signature use of looping and layering to create a lush and atmospheric sound. Another highlight is "Have A Little Faith," a soulful and introspective original composition that showcases Frisell's skills as a songwriter.

WOW I was thinking about kimock as this started and then I scrolled down and saw this... would love to hear frisell rip with him

not surprised! Both monster musicians with unspeakably beautiful tone and expression. So dedicated.. :o)

Kimock is a HUGE Frisell fan ... I personally gave him several live recordings over the years for which he expressed his gratitude.

@mbruns59 I've got them both :)

@brandobean I get what you're saying in terms of recordings/countryish, but live you never know. I heard him with his trio with Eyvand Kand and Rudy Royston last year and it was some of the most inventive exciting playing I've ever heard from him in 20+ yrs. He also played some completely incendiary huge stuff. More than anyone I know, live is the deal with Frisell. He makes good and sometimes great CDs, but he is totally alive when playing live. East/West is awesome as is the Live trio CD.

Feeling and truth above all else - Bill Frisell communicates that to me with every note and his whole approach. When I feel myself slipping off course, second guessing my decisions, in whatever aspect of my life, I listen to Frisell speak his heart and I am right back on course. In my book a genius although he'd probably shy away from that statement. Sorry Bill!

Steve Kimock and Frisell need to get together.

'Conservative'???

Don't tell Paul Motian.

couldn't be more correct

@Micahb2 I totally agree. That steinberger/klein has a modern rolled off sound that I really dig for him. When he moved to the Tele sound, it was coincident with his playing more country and conservative and he sorta lost me. I liked the beauty and then the "evil" he could get with that Klein with distortion. I wonder what pickups he had in it?

Love Frisell and all the guys in this group. Whoever's talking about Frisell "looking down" on anybody or anything has no clue. He's one of the people nominally in the jazz world that embraces more styles of music than anyone I can think of. If you think Frisell only composes and doesn't recompose (or jazz) his stuff, you're mistaken. Frisell is one of the most in the moment and deep in the music players you'll ever see/hear live. He looks like he has no clue where he is sometimes inside it

Have you ever played with or *even met* Frisell? He's just about the quietest, most humble guy you could possibly imagine, and he most certainly wouldn't be putting John Hiatt down. Remember the title of the album he first recorded this song? "Have a Little Faith". Yes, he named the whole record after it and it's a recording of everything from Ives to Madonna.

He most certainly does not think that this is beneath him. What's on earth is wrong with enjoying something when you play it?

beautiful

I'm not sure you're correct re: bad attitude. Frisell has always had "big ears" and has heard the beauty in the simplest things and managed to mine them for deep beauty. He has been a fan of Hiatt for years, recording a LOT of his songs. I don't think he would do that if he were just having a joke at Hiatt's expense.
avastuller
Frisell has been of fan of John Hiatt for many years. He even once said in an interview that Hiatt was one of his favorite guitarists.

This is a little different and alot beautiful! I can't believe there isn't more Ron Miles on You Tube!

great to see this again. saw it more than 10 years ago on dutch tv. there's also a medley, starting with "when you wish upon a star" solo. bathosue, if you have more, please share.
by the way, this quartet sucked at the beginning, in 1995, i saw them live then, but here they really "flow."
kimprosser061017
hey does anyone know anything about the concept of that album, Its wierd.
entspanntundruhig
I agree, he's just that much better with a tele.
jolmstead
I agree with Micahb2 about the Klein electric guitar. That was a very nice sounding guitar that I wish he still played.
mcboberzkia
