Various - Modesty Blaise Vol 1

Review by Madeline Lund

The album Modesty Blaise by Various is a delightful collection of tracks that showcase the best of 1960s music. From upbeat pop to groovy jazz, this album has it all. The artists featured on the album include legends such as Dusty Springfield, The Kinks, and The Zombies.

One of the standout tracks on the album is Dusty Springfield's "The Look of Love". Her soulful voice and the smooth instrumentation make for a truly enchanting listening experience. The Kinks' "A Well Respected Man" is another highlight, with its catchy melody and witty lyrics.

The album also features some lesser-known tracks that are just as enjoyable. "Modesty Blaise" by John Dankworth and "The Liquidator" by Shirley Bassey are both funky instrumental tracks that are sure to get listeners grooving.

Any chance you have the flip of their first single Up and Down? I am assuming this is their second....right?

Both of their best recordings were the b sides, makes you wonder what Deram were trying to do at the time and what the band were actually trying to play. Obvious with hindsight. Deram were looking for a 60s hit at the expense of their integrity as a Mod / Soul band.
This is their best Deram side for me, A great soulful dancing melody, Fantastic vocal and backing, The hammond organ is perfect, Drums are tight, the track is really cool and well written. I also think the original 45 is a tricky one to find these days. A a 45 to keep hold of !
