Unexpected for Drag City to release this. Spencer Kingman had a flurry of activity several years before this release, and seemed to disappear from view. I saw him touring as a band member of Dirty Projectors, and he opened with a set of his own material - he made an instant impression. His songs here strike a perfectly balanced note of Paul Simon-esque world-weariness, post-9/11 mood, cosmopolitan liberal sensibility, and is bursting with "old millennial" vibes to boot. Soft fingerpicking, instantly recognizable folk song-forms, delicate vocals, refined phrasing, pitch-perfect singing. Your parents would have loved this in the 60s, minus the mentions of Nintendo characters and the War on Terror. The closing song, an interpretation of the fight song of the Revolutionary Afghan Women's Association, is a brilliant postmodern move. Kingman's silence since this release is a sad reality.
