Review by Uri Baruchin

Sigríðar Níelsdóttur's album "Sveitasæla" is a beautiful collection of traditional Icelandic folk songs. The album features Níelsdóttur's stunning vocals and her skillful playing of the Icelandic langspil, a traditional stringed instrument.

The album is an authentic representation of Icelandic culture and music. The songs are steeped in folklore and history, and Níelsdóttur's interpretation of them is both respectful and innovative. The album features a mix of upbeat and melancholic songs, showcasing Níelsdóttur's versatility as a musician.

The production on the album is minimal, allowing Níelsdóttur's voice and langspil to shine. The sound is intimate and raw, giving the listener a sense of being transported to a small Icelandic village.

About Sigríðar Níelsdóttur

Sigríður Níelsdóttir (19302011) was a Danish-Icelandic lady, who has been making lo-fi music all her life, back indeed before the term 'lo-fi' was ever coined. Finally, in 2001 the world caught up with her and she began recording prolifically. Her music incorporates children's songs, psalms, folk& choruses constructed from a sample of a pack of dogs barking& household implements, you name it. She recorded directly onto a cassette player at home. Although she never performed live due to shyness some other Icelandic musicians have formed a group specifically to play her music. At the tender age of 70 she started recording and releasing her own music straight from her living room. 7 years later she had 59 albums to her name with more than 600 songs; an eccentric myriad of catchy compositions mixing in her pets purrs and coos, found toys, kitchen percussion and casio keyboards. Before long the musician and visual artist, Sigríður Níelsdóttir, became an adored cult figure in the Icelandic music scene, represented here by her young apprentices Mugison, múm, Sin Fang, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Mr. Silla and Kría Brekkan who pay tribute to the grandmas irresistible tunes and charm.
