The Shamen - In Gorbachev We Trust

Review by Olga Bowman

In Gorbachev We Trust, the 1989 album by Scottish electronic dance music group Shamen, is a bold and politically charged work that remains relevant and powerful to this day. The album's title is a reference to the then-president of the Soviet Union, and its themes range from Cold War politics to environmentalism to the power of music itself.

The album opens with the anthemic "Move Any Mountain," which sets the tone for the rest of the record with its soaring vocals and pulsing beats. Other standout tracks include "Human NRG," a call to arms for environmental activism, and "Omega Amigo," a trippy and hypnotic exploration of the power of sound.

Throughout the album, Shamen blend elements of techno, acid house, and psychedelic rock to create a unique and immersive sonic landscape. The production is top-notch, with layers of synths, samples, and percussion creating a dense and intricate sound.

Founded in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1985 by , , & with the band name . The group changed its name to The Shamen in late 1985. Early Alone Again Or and The Shamen material was primarily psychedelic indie rock. The group's first album under the name The Shamen was 1987's "Drop". By 1987, Colin was inspired by M/A/R/R/S and similar new groups that used sampling and beats. As he delved into exploring new technology and dance sounds, the new direction caused the Shamen lineup to shift: Derek McKenzie, unimpressed with the changes, left the fold to return to school in 1987. Colin added energetic new bass player (a.k.a. Will Sinnott) in October 1987 and he himself moved to concentrate on vocals and guitar. At this point, the pieces were in place for the group to become what they would eventually be remembered for: one of the early pioneers of what became known as "indie-dance

!Iran and the orthodox jew elders are @ peace. But !IraN was and has always been on the drawing blocKz...Palistein has virtually been wiped out of existence, which to me means GeNaciDe ! Another ancient culture being buried. No wmd, no nuk threat. Should worry more about earthquakes and volcanoes and the real nuK threat, JAPAN

Great Album. Happy times.

Well yes, it's kinds sad these preachers jump to conclusions with so much over confidence and hubris. Let's just hope the Yanks don't go for Iran, eh? Wish I could find the Gorbachev version of 'Christopher Mayhew Says' on YouTube, that's a MAD track!

When the drums first started I thought what the hell is this. nIt kept on going and I was sure I was going to hate it. Once the singing started, I started to enjoy it. It's different. I lioke it.

Would that be Mike Nesmith's woolhat off? Kidding, this is quite different for The Shamen to tackle.

Hats OFF to them

My favourite Shamen Album - as they transitioned from psychadelic rock to dance legends. Psydchadeic guitar work is brilliant on Knature of a Girl. This title track is wonderful -owing a little to DM's To Have and To Hold.
