Rilo Kiley - Rkives

Review by Paulo M Fernandez

Rkives, the posthumous release from indie band Rilo Kiley, is a heartfelt and eclectic compilation of B-sides, demos, and unreleased tracks. The album showcases the band's signature blend of indie rock, folk, and pop, and offers a glimpse into their creative process and evolution over the years.

The album opens with the upbeat and catchy "Let Me Back In," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The track is followed by a mix of previously unreleased songs, such as the stripped-down and emotional "It'll Get You There," and demo versions of fan favorites like "Dejalo."

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Emotional," a haunting and introspective song that showcases Jenny Lewis' powerful vocals and the band's ability to create a moody and atmospheric sound. Another highlight is "Well, You Left," a catchy and upbeat track that features a memorable guitar riff and a sing-along chorus.

Summary by Paulo M Fernandez

Rkives is a must-have for any Rilo Kiley fan, as it offers a deeper understanding of the band's creative process and showcases their impressive range and versatility. While the album may not be as cohesive as their previous releases, it is a fitting tribute to a band that left an indelible mark on the indie rock scene.

If you can judge the quality of a band from its B-sides compilations, then clearly Rilo Kiley was a brilliant band. Like with Bruce Springsteen's outtakes circa "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "The River", or Paul Kelly's "Hidden Things", it isn't so much that this B-side album has inferior material, as much as somehow these songs didn't fit with (rather than on) the albums from which they were omitted. The best of this collection is absolutely top-shelf, and if you kept the best 35 minutes, you would have to give it 5 stars. None is better than the epic "A Town Called Luckey" where the 30-year old protagonist lingers between quiet, if confused, in the verses, to ramp up to an angry crescendo on the choruses (and even moreso on the chanty bridge towards the end of the song). Opener "Let Me Back In" is a gorgeous, breezy love song from Jenny Lewis to her hometown, Los Angeles. The catchy "All the Drugs" is a perfect keyboards/guitar pop-rock song, whose cheerfulness almost disguises the observational lecture to a possibly recovering junkie. And after hearing the full electric demo of "Rest of my Life", you wonder why they only re-recorded essentially a fragment for the "Take Offs and Landings" album - never could the adverb/adjective combination, "beautifully pathetic" be so appropriate. The scope is so broad, and the execution (of all things?) is so excellent, that it's almost tempting to say that this a good place for casual fans to start. Yes, really - on a B-sides album.

I'm sorry they didn't include this one on the album. It's great. I assume it would have been on the Under The Blacklight album.

You want the last hurrah, it should be mine out here
They don't care, but we do, yeah we do"

Best song on the album, then "Bury, Bury, Bury" in second.

I always love a Blake/Jenny duet!
