Review by Senior Brollero

On Campus by John Lee Hooker is a classic blues album that showcases the talented musician's unique style and sound. The album, released in 1998, features Hooker performing live at the University of Oregon in 1973.

The album captures Hooker's raw and powerful voice, accompanied by his signature guitar playing. The tracks on the album range from slow, soulful blues ballads to upbeat, foot-tapping rhythms.

The standout tracks on the album include "Boom Boom," "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer," and "I'm in the Mood." These songs highlight Hooker's ability to convey emotion through his music, and his mastery of the blues genre.

The sixth and last LP for John Lee Hooker on Vee-Jay,published in 1964,maybe is less considered because of the lack of a top charting single (although "I'm Leaving" is a great song);sadly there are no informations, apart from The Vandellas as backing vocals, about the musician backing the Hook, because the band sounds really good, especially bass and guitar (a couple of fine solos).Side 1 plus "Poor Me" is similar to the previous Vee-Jay LP "The Big Soul",i could define it blues-soul,side 2 is Hooker accompained only by soft drums;the guitar sound in this second part is fantastic, for me one of the best performances of Hooker on guitar. My favorite songs on side 1 are "I'm Leaving","Birmingham Blues" and "I Want To Shout",on side 2 "Half A Stranger","Bottle Up And Go","Poor Me" and "One Way Ticket".I'm so proud to own an original Vee-Jay vinyl of this album, sounding fantastic, better than many "modern" vinyl reissues.
