Carlos Kleiber, while keeping a perfect coherence from the first to the last bar, does not seem to submit to any predictable way of treating the structure of this symphony, which is difficult to handle because of its richness of inspiration. Carlos Kleiber's master stroke is explained by an immense variety of phrasing. The tempo is never set in stone, it can be wide or narrow, serving the most serene or the most tense and dramatic climates. Even under tension, elegance is the order of the day and the Vienna Philharmonic responds to its slightest inflection. This recording was awarded the World Recording Prize.

The liner notes are brilliantly written with great information. I might also add that this symphony is not only difficult to perform both technically & musically, but it's also very difficult to conduct. The violins beginning singing at the uppermost part of the fingerboard, & the notes must be played perfectly in tune & cannot be drowned out by the power that comes from the rest of the orchestra. The counterpoint in this symphony is similar to that of Brahms' 2nd symphony, esp in the 1st movement. It is very easy for the orchestra to become unsynchronized.
When it comes to the Brahms symphonies, Carlos Kleiber & Karajan are hard to equal. I only wish that the former had performed symphonies 1 & 3 as well.
I'd like to add one final comment. I didn't listen to classical music until 1975 after which I became completely engrossed it it to the point that I began studying violin (in college). My teacher was a friend of Michael Rabin. Both, of course, studied with Ivan Galamian. Her name was Elizabeth Ivanoff Holborn, & she was regarded as one of the top teachers in S. California at the time. Brahms, of course, was among her favorite composers. Whenever I'd mention Brahms, her face would turn euphoric. Probably more so than any other composer, the music of Brahms could bring her to tears. I have listened to this symphony hundreds of times but have yet to be tired of it. Of the four, it's probably the most profound.

Every tiny section of this great masterpiece is ideally realised by Kleiber an his musicians - neither too much nor too little - most interpretations one hears one will think, "That was a little too indulgent" or "That was a shade too straight" - this is just "spot on" throughout.

Even though I hear Celibidache and put the recordings on top, I must admire Kleiber's performance very much
His characteristic agreeably sharp edges, this is one of his more listenable records, his bevelled edges more at one with the Brahms’ idiom; there’s a pleasant clipped security even if he doesn’t approach Jochum’s spectacular passion while exposed strings incline to incongruous Viennese sweetness. Kleiber is elegant, clear and suave but fails to turn aristocrasy into depth of insight as does Karajan. Inclines to the static Germanic norms rather than strong architecture, despite his headstrong Beethoven Five.

la fuerza y el dramatico estilo de Brahms, en todo su explendor, y ese tercer movimiento con la fuerza de los bronces y esa fuerza euforica me motiva y me exalta el espiritun y el animo. y esa suavidad espectante del ultimo movimiento con la flauta traversa en dialogo con las cuerdas, tan sutil que hermoso el oboe y el clarinete en su dialogo es emocionante, todo tan sutil, oh que sutiles los bronces, pero la flauta reina en esta parte, pero lo dramatico lo empieza a inundar todo, las cuerdas y toda la orquesta nos llevan al drama y ese juego que no consigue calmar la tempestad y todo se define entre los violines y los timbales, median los bronces ahora lo arrazan todo y la coda final maxima tension, ..que dramaticamente hermosa es la musica del Gtan Johannes
To me one or two weird instances of marked rubato but he certainly gets to a lot of the inner meaning of the work.
