Review by chidananda swaroop

Drum Song, the album by Jackie Mittoo, is a masterpiece of reggae music. Mittoo, a Jamaican keyboardist, composer, and arranger, is known for his exceptional talent, and this album showcases his skills in full glory. Released in 1974, Drum Song is a collection of ten tracks that are a mix of instrumental and vocal pieces.

The album opens with the title track, "Drum Song," a slow and melodic instrumental piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The track features Mittoo's keyboard skills, which are complemented by the drums and bass guitar. The second track, "Grand Funk," is an upbeat instrumental piece that showcases Mittoo's mastery of the Hammond organ.

The album's third track, "Peenie Wallie," is a vocal piece that features the soulful voice of Mittoo's longtime collaborator, the singer Winston Wright. The song is a cover of a classic Jamaican folk song and is given a fresh twist with Mittoo's arrangement.

The album's standout track is "Drum Song Dub." This instrumental piece is a dub version of the album's title track and is a perfect example of Mittoo's innovative approach to reggae music. The track features heavy use of echo and reverb, creating a dreamy and ethereal atmosphere.
