Review by Robyn Ruckel

The album Violinkonzert Nr 5 A moll Op37 Schottische Fantasie Op 46 by Henri Vieuxtemps Max Bruch, The New Symphony Orchestra Of London, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Jascha Heifetz is a delightful treat for classical music enthusiasts. The album features two of the most celebrated violin concertos of the 19th century, performed by the legendary Jascha Heifetz, accompanied by the New Symphony Orchestra of London, under the baton of Sir Malcolm Sargent.

The album opens with Vieuxtemps' Violinkonzert Nr 5 A moll Op37, which is a technically challenging piece that demands virtuosity and finesse from the soloist. Heifetz's interpretation of the piece is impeccable, and he delivers a flawless performance, effortlessly navigating through the intricate passages and producing a rich, warm tone that is a joy to listen to. The New Symphony Orchestra of London provides an excellent accompaniment to Heifetz, creating a beautiful musical synergy that is a hallmark of great classical music.

The second piece on the album is Max Bruch's Schottische Fantasie Op 46, which is a beautiful tribute to Scottish folk music. The piece features a series of variations on Scottish folk melodies, which are seamlessly integrated into a larger musical structure. Heifetz's performance of the piece is outstanding, as he brings out the beauty and charm of each melody, while also displaying his technical prowess. The New Symphony Orchestra of London once again provides excellent support, creating a rich, vibrant musical tapestry that is a joy to listen to.

Merci Mr Bruch ! Et Merci Maître Yasha !

I first heard this piece as a teenager in a concert in New York's Central Park by the Naumberg Symphony Orchestra with Sidney Harth as soloist. It positively blew me away and has remained one of my favorite pieces through the decades. At various times in his career Sidney Harth was the concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Interestingly, Max Bruch (unlike Mendelssohn) didn't compose this piece after an inspiring trip to Scotland. He just went to the library and researched Scottish folk tunes and classic melodies.

The greatest recording of this work ever done, with the exception of the one done by my mother.

beautiful!

It goes without saying that Heifetz’s playing in this magnificent work comes as close to technical perfection as anyone will likely ever achieve. His intonation is well-nigh perfect, and his tone is intense, rich, and pure. More than that, his playing is warm and, well, human. There is pain in every phrase. I am struck by his inflection, mare than that of any other violinist. Jascha Heifetz was quite simply the best violinist who ever lived!

This has to be the greatest music I’ve ever listened to.

I grew up listening to this. To this day, this recording is my favorite of any in the repertoire. For all of the discussion of being possibly/probably the finest technical violinist of all time, I think Heifetz’ articulation isn’t lauded enough, and is beautifully showcased in this. Thank you so much for uploading this wonderful recording.
