Head Of David - Soul Spark

Review by Anurag Gogna

Soul Spark, the latest album by Head of David, is a thrilling and dynamic release that showcases the band's unique blend of heavy metal, punk, and experimental rock. From the opening track "The Beginning" to the closing number "A Spell for the Death of Man," the album is a non-stop barrage of crushing riffs, thunderous drums, and haunting vocals.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Descent into the Inferno," a relentless and intense song that features some of the band's most ferocious guitar work. "Lullaby (For a Stressed Out World)" is another highlight, with its haunting melody and eerie atmosphere creating a sense of unease that is both captivating and unsettling.

Throughout the album, the band's musicianship is impeccable, with each member delivering powerful performances that perfectly complement the songwriting. The production is also top-notch, with the mix allowing every instrument to shine through while still maintaining a raw and aggressive sound.

About Head Of David

Formed in the early 1980s in The Black Country (West Midlands, UK), Head Of David was an influential alternative rock band with punk and industrial overtones and is best known as a prototypical Godflesh, due to the fact that ex-Napalm Death member Justin Broadrick played drums for the band prior to forming Godflesh. Head Of David split in 1991, though members Stephen Burroughs, Eric Jurenskovis, Paul Sharp and Dave Cochrane still play together. Members: Stephen Reuben Burroughs - vocals Eric Jurenovskis - guitar Dave Cochrane - bass (1986 - 1989) Paul Sharp - drums (1986 - 1987) Justin Broadrick - drums (1987 - 1989) Bipin Kumar - bass / backing vocals (1991)

Incredible, Fear Factory used this band for inspiration before. It remains me the Self Immolation song Demo before the Concrete recording.

This is pretty cool. Industrial with early hip hop drum machine action and heroic rockabilly guitar licks... This would’ve been perfect in Terminator 2. Maybe if the band had worn ridiculous black cowboy hats & jackets in the video like many other U.K. goth rawk acts of this era, people wouldn’t be complaining so much in the comments.

I bootlegged HOD live when they supported Big Black at the Archway Club in Manchester back in ‘86 and they gave Big Black a run for their money! They had a drummer back then.
That was an astounding gig! I even got Steve Albini to introduce HOD at the start of my tape as he was in n the crowd before they came on!

Songs off the "Pure" record by Godflesh sound  a lot like this, I know Justin of Godflesh was the HOD drummer early on in their career. Great sound here, love this.

I HATED this tape when I bought it once it came out. But, listening to it now, it's not that bad.

"How Primitive Are You" + "Tonight We Murder" = "Head Like A Hole"

Oh did I mention there is no drummer. That means that's a drum machine pretty damn good if you ask me.
