Charlie Parker, The Woody Herman Orchestra - Bird With The Herd

Review by Rune Clausen

The album "Bird With The Herd" by Charlie Parker and The Woody Herman Orchestra is a masterpiece that showcases the brilliance of two musical geniuses. The album features some of Parker's most iconic performances, including "Lullaby of Birdland" and "Ornithology," which are still considered jazz standards today.

The album's title track, "Bird With The Herd," is a unique collaboration between Parker and Herman. The song begins with a hauntingly beautiful saxophone solo by Parker, which is then joined by Herman's clarinet. The two instruments blend together seamlessly, creating a sound that is both soothing and exhilarating.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Leap Frog," which features Parker's virtuosic saxophone playing. The track begins with a fast-paced, swinging rhythm, which is then complemented by Parker's lightning-fast saxophone runs. The Woody Herman Orchestra provides a solid foundation for Parker's improvisations, creating a sound that is both intricate and cohesive.

American alto saxophonist, composer and bebop pioneer (b. August 29, 1920, Kansas City - d. March 12, 1955, New York City, aged 34). Widely considered to be one of the most influential of jazz saxophonists, jazz musicians, and indeed musicians in general. Also known as 'Bird' (a shortening of 'Yardbird', Parker acquired the nickname early in his career with many contradictory stories regarding the name's origin). Parker was an extremely fast virtuoso and introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas into jazz, including rapid passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. Parker died on March 12, 1955 in the age of only 34 in the suite of his friend and patron Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter at the Stanhope Hotel in New York City. The official causes of death were lobar pneumonia and a bleeding ulcer, but Parker also had an advanced case of cirrhosis and had suffered a heart attack. The coroner who performed his autopsy mistakenly estimated Parker's 34-year-old body to be between 50 and 60 years of age.

Charlie Parker had such an incredible ear he could sit in with a big band, play music he had never heard before, and sound like he'd rehearsed with them for months. He did it with Dizzy Gillespie's big band in 1948 (Dizzy claimed to have a tape but, alas, it's never surfaced), he did it with Neil Hefti's studio group on "Repetition," and he did it again in 1951 with the Third Herd.

This is insane...that Bird solo starting around 5'-05 has to be some of the best playing he ever did. There's a few intervallic licks that foreshadow 'Trane , Cannonball and Dolphy!
