Review by Εμμανουήλ Χρύσης

Suites Para Violoncelo is an exceptional album featuring the works of Benjamin Britten performed by the renowned cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. The album is a collection of three suites composed for solo cello, each showcasing the versatility and technical prowess of the instrument.

Rostropovich's performance is both technically precise and emotionally compelling. He captures the essence of each suite, bringing out the intricate melodies and harmonies with finesse. The listener is transported to a world of rich, emotive music that is both expressive and evocative.

The first suite, Op. 72, is a meditative and introspective piece, with a hauntingly beautiful melody that is both melancholic and uplifting. The second suite, Op. 80, is a more technical and complex work, with intricate rhythms and complex harmonies that showcase Rostropovich's virtuosity as a cellist. The final suite, Op. 87, is a more upbeat and lively piece, with a driving rhythm and playful melodies that are both joyful and energetic.

About Britten, Rostropovich

British composer, conductor, and pianist. Born: November 22, 1913, in Lowestoft, UK - died: December 04, 1976, in Aldeburgh, UK. He showed talent from an early age, and first came to public attention with the a cappella choral work A Boy Was Born in 1934. With the premiere of his opera Peter Grimes in 1945, he leapt to international fame. For the next fifteen years he devoted much of his compositional attention to writing operas, establishing him as one of the leading 20th century figures in this genre. Britten's interests as a composer were wide-ranging; he produced important music in such varied genres as orchestral, choral, solo vocal (much of it written for the tenor Peter Pears), chamber and instrumental, as well as film music. He also took a great interest in writing music for children and amateur performers, and was a fine pianist and conductor. One of Britten's most important works, The War Requiem was completed 20 December 1961, and first performed 30 May 1962. Britten received many prizes and honors, including becoming a Companion of Honour in 1952, and a member of the Order of Merit in 1965.
