Boris With Merzbow - Megatone

Review by Christopher Barosky

The collaboration between Boris and Merzbow on the album Megatone is an intense and experimental journey into noise rock and avant-garde soundscapes. The album features six tracks, each one a sonic exploration of the possibilities of distortion, feedback, and electronic manipulation.

From the opening track "Goloka Pt.1," the listener is plunged into a world of chaotic noise and dissonant guitars, punctuated by bursts of electronic glitches and screams. The following tracks "Prelude to a Broken Arm" and "Huge" continue the onslaught of abrasive sounds, with Merzbow's signature noise textures blending seamlessly with Boris' heavy riffs and pounding drums.

The fourth track "Sinobuzen" provides a brief respite from the chaos, with a more ambient and atmospheric sound that still manages to maintain the tension and unease of the previous tracks. This is followed by "Akuma No Uta," a standout track that showcases Boris' ability to craft catchy and memorable melodies even amidst the sonic assault.

Summary by Christopher Barosky

The album closes with "Akirame Flower," a slowly building epic that culminates in a wall of sound that threatens to overwhelm the listener. Throughout the album, Boris and Merzbow push the boundaries of what is possible in terms of sound and composition, creating an album that is both challenging and rewarding for those willing to dive into its depths. Megatone is a must-listen for fans of experimental music and noise rock.
