Review by Maria Julia Maju

The album Cello Sonatas by Beethoven, featuring the legendary pianist Sviatoslav Richter and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, is a breathtaking musical experience. The album comprises the complete cello sonatas of Beethoven, including the Sonata No. 1 in F major, Sonata No. 2 in G minor, and Sonata No. 3 in A major.

The two virtuosos deliver a stunning performance in each of the sonatas, showcasing their exceptional musicianship and technical prowess. The interplay between Richter's dynamic piano playing and Rostropovich's soulful cello is a treat for the ears.

In the Sonata No. 1, the duo creates a beautiful balance between the piano and cello, highlighting the lyrical melodies and intricate harmonies. In the Sonata No. 2, they infuse the music with a sense of urgency and intensity, capturing the emotional depth of Beethoven's composition. The Sonata No. 3 is a masterpiece of musical storytelling, with Richter and Rostropovich conveying the drama and passion of the piece with consummate skill.

German composer and pianist, born in 1770 (baptized 17 December 1770) in Bonn, Germany and died 26 March 1827 in Vienna, Austria. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in classical music. Beethoven led Viennese Classicism to its highest development and paved the way for Romantic music. Beethoven was the eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop's Kapellmeister. He moved in 1792 to Vienna, where he had some lessons from Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard-player and original composer. By 1815 increasing deafness made public performance impossible and accentuated existing eccentricities of character, patiently tolerated by a series of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph. Beethoven did much to enlarge the possibilities of music and widen the horizons of later generations of composers. To his contemporaries he was sometimes a controversial figure, making heavy demands on listeners both by the length and by the complexity of his writing, as he explored new fields of music.

Sin que haya una impresión aciaga que perturbe estas sonatas del op 5, como anota Swafford, «la introducción de la Sonata nº2 en sol menor es sombría e inquietante», poso de esa “energía” latente en toda su obra que habla a mis entrañas

As someone has written under another R & R performance, here are "two old masters." And here again, they are paying the supreme compliment of virtuosity to the ur-master, Beethoven.
