Review by William Hanlon

Octets by Alec Wilder is a delightful album that showcases the composer's mastery of chamber music. The album features a collection of eight pieces, each scored for a different combination of instruments, ranging from the traditional string quartet to the more unusual pairing of flute, clarinet, bassoon, and horn.

The performances on this album are outstanding, with each musician bringing their own unique voice to the ensemble. The interplay between the instruments is beautifully crafted, with each part contributing to the overall texture of the music.

One of the standout pieces on the album is "Octet for Strings," which features a lush, romantic melody that is expertly woven throughout the ensemble. The piece builds to a dramatic climax before resolving in a serene and peaceful coda.

Another highlight is "Octet for Horns," which showcases the versatility of the horn as a solo instrument and its ability to blend seamlessly with other instruments. The piece is full of playful and inventive melodies that keep the listener engaged from beginning to end.
